I’m interested in sailing, but how do I get started?

Enroll in our introduction to sailing course where you will learn basic boat handling skills with qualified, experienced sailors. The course is run over 4 nights. Part of each evening is spent in class learning the theory and safety aspects of sailing. This is followed by practical experience in either a dinghy or a catamaran where you will get the opportunity to put thSSBC_GP14_00102e theory into practice and take the helm (steering wheel!).

Upon completion of the introductory course in Swords Sailing & Boating Club you will be entitled to complimentary membership of the club for the remainder of the season. After this you can join the Club as a temporary member for the first year. This entitles you to full use of the club, attendance at social events e.g. fun days, club BBQ's etc etc.

Or alternatively you could do an Irish Sailing Association (ISA) course at the Fingal Sailing School on the Estuary whom we work closely with. Contact 01-845 1979 for further details.

After completing a course, how do I follow up my sailing?

Easy. ComeSSBC_GP14_002 along to the clubhouse on either Wednesday evening or Sunday afternoon and take part in the club races. We will ensure that you get to 'crew' on either a dinghy or a catamaran as often as possible. We have an 'adopt a crew/new recruit' policy in the club which endeavors to get you involved in races. This will be rotated to include rescue and race management. The sailing season begins with the 'Early Birds' in March and finishes with the 'Frostbite's' in November. In between there are plenty of opportunities for you to come along and avail of an opportunity to crew with us in Swords Sailing & Boating Club. All are welcome.

What are the costs involved in sailing?SSBC_Club_001-1

Initially you will need to purchase a buoyancy aid (lifejacket) and although not strictly necessary you will also need a wet suit and a spray jacket. These will cost about €200. After a while you may decide to buy your own dinghy. There are always second hand boats for sale either through the club or advertised in Buy and Sell. To get you started, a decent second hand boat can cost as little as €600 which would include a launch trolley and sails. Buying a second hand boat is the best way to start and from there you can go bigger and better as your skills and passion for sailing grow. If your children want a boat too, these also can be bought from next to nothing secondhand such as a Mirror (2 man boat) or an Optimist (single handed) for under €320! L plates are not included.
